Frisbee – the most timeless toy of all – celebrated its 60th Anniversary this year!
On January 23rd 1957, Wham-O rolled out the first batch of their aerodynamic plastic discs–now known to millions of fans all over the world as Frisbees.
The story of the iconic product began in Connecticut in 1871, when William Frisbie opened the Frisbie Pie Company. Local students were playing around with the empty pie tins, throwing them to each other, yelling “Frisbie!” Seventy seven years later, in 1948, two partners – Walter Frederick Morrison and Warren Franscioni – invented new plastic version of the disc, which would fly better and further and called it “Flying Saucer”?
In 1955, Morrison improved the initial model and sold it to Wham-O, as “Pluto Platter”.
Wham-O changed the name to “Frisbee” – misspelling the name of the historic pie company – in 1958, made significant improvements to the design, put aggressive marketing behind it and era of the new sport has begun. Just by 1977 Wham-O sold over 100 million units of its famous toy.
Up to now, Frisbee stays a beloved toy of multiple generations. Players enjoy this fast, energetic game all around the world – in the parks, on the beach, anywhere! It evolved into the beautiful athletic sports, which unites people and keeps them active, healthy, and happy.
